UNEXPLAINED INFERTILITY

In about a quarter of couples, the cause of infertility is not found. It is more common in men than in women. It is called unexplained or idiopathic infertility. In such cases, male partner has a normal result of seminal ejaculate and the woman has confirmed ovulation, preserved fallopian tubes, a correctly formed uterine cavity and a normal ovarian reserve. Possible causes of unexplained infertility are hidden disorders in the development of follicles, ovulation, the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and in the quality of semen, as well as in the fertilization and implantation of embryos.

In many cases, unexplained infertility is the result of a combination of unfavorable factors, such as a woman’s age exceeding 35 years, and a worse but still normal result of a spermiogram, each of which would otherwise not cause infertility.

The possibility of spontaneous conception is lower if:

  • the woman is older than 35 years and
  • if the infertility lasts more than two years.

Younger couples with unexplained infertility lasting a year can wait another year for natural conception. In many cases, fertility can be improved through positive lifestyle changes. Avoiding excessive consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs is very important. Ensuring sufficient exercise and a healthy weight can have a very positive effect on fertility. It is also important to meet all nutritional needs to maintain reproductive health.

After another year with lifesytle changes for younger couples and immediatelly for couples older than 35, we start with MAR procedures, since the cause is not known to be treated in other ways (drugs or surgery). With MAR procedures, we try to bypass certain physiological processes of conception, which can be disturbed.

In the beginning, at least 2-3 IUI procedures are recommended and in case of failure, continuation of treatment with IVF procedures.
