What is ovulation?
Ovulation is the phase of the menstrual cycle when a mature egg (ovum) is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube. This is a condition for conception to occur naturally. A woman is most fertile for about 36 hours.
If fertilization does not occur, the lining of the uterus, along with the unfertilized egg, is shed from the body in a process called menstruation. This marks the beginning of the next menstrual cycle. Menstruation, however, is not sufficient proof that a woman is actually ovulating.
Predicting ovulation allows for better and more efficient timing of intercourse to either achieve or avoid pregnancy.
Certain signs of ovulation include:
- change in basal body temperature
- change in the texture and amount of discharge (wet, stretchy discharge, most similar to egg white)
- changes in the texture and position of the cervix (the cervix becomes soft, lifts and opens slightly)
Predicting ovulation
Ovulation can be detected by the previously mentioned signs, but it can be predicted more reliably by certain established methods:
- ultrasound examination
- ovulation tests
- ovulation microscopes
- measurement of basal body temperature
Any ovulation control method that you do yourself must first be learned, which usually takes at least 3 cycles, it can be longer.
